Ice Cream Themed Birthday Party

My middle son has a {wee} sweet tooth.  He gets this trait from me as my husband loves to remind me.  So I was not surprised at all when he requested an ice cream theme for his 5th birthday party this past weekend.  We decided to make it a pool party as well to take advantage of the hot weather.

I went back and forth on a few ideas for his birthday cake.  I debated an actual ice cream cake, baking the cupcakes inside the cones, or making a cake in the shape of an ice cream cone.  In the end it seemed cute and easy to make “faux” ice cream cones with some sugar cones and cupcakes stacked in a row (you can see the side view of the cupcakes best in the picture above.)

This was probably the easiest birthday cake I’ve tackled yet.  We simply added a “5” candle when it was time to sing and that was the extent of the fancy decorations!

In addition to the cupcakes we had and ice cream sundae bar set up.  We had three flavors of ice cream, chocolate chips, marshmallows, M&Ms, berry topping, chocolate sauce,  and sprinkles.  The kids (and a few grown-ups!) had an absolute blast with this!! The only thing I wish I thought through more was the fact that it was in the high 80s outside and man that ice cream (and the chocolate chips) melted fast!

I didn’t really plan any party games because as I suspected the kids were in the pool the entire time having a blast.  We did get an ice cream cone shaped pinata at Hobby Lobby-it was normally $12.99 and I used a coupon so that was an awesome find! We also found 3/$1 packs of ice cream cone shaped bubbles at the Dollar Tree for favors. All in all a very affordable party to put on too!

It was a great time for everyone, although it yet again proved to me that I am not a “party blogger!”  I really tried to get more pictures but I have no idea how other bloggers do it! My husband was running defense for me as I was trying to snap a few pics of the ice cream sundae set up but kids were swarming everywhere and my bubbles kept falling over, lol, it was chaos so I gave up and let them at the sweets!

Do you have summer birthdays in your family? We have three so I see a lot of pool parties in our future! What is your favorite type of kid’s party to throw?

  1. I’m so impressed by your party skills! Every birthday party I throw ends up costing hundreds of dollars for just a fairly basic party, and I never get any pictures at all. Your ice cream cone cupcakes are brilliant. I just wish we had some Summer birthdays around here so I could copy you.

  5. I love this idea, and that cake is perfect. I find kid birthday parties are way out of control. I love that you came up with simple ideas that anyone can actually do. The last birthday party that we went to (for a 2-year-old) the parents had hired a party planner! Totally ridiculous.
