Offer a Variety of Food
Birds have different nutritional needs and interests, so providing a variety of food types is a great start. Here are some of my favorites:
- Black oil sunflower seeds: A favorite among many backyard birds like cardinals, chickadees, and tufted titmouse.
- Safflower seeds and thistle seeds: Great choices for attracting different species of birds like goldfinches, pine siskins, dark-eyed juncos, and chickadees.
- Peanut butter: Smear a bit on tree bark to attract woodpeckers and nuthatches. Look for natural peanut butters without a lot of additives and artificial sweeteners.
- Peanut pieces: These are a hit with blue jays, woodpeckers, and other large birds as well as smaller birds like tufted titmouse.
- Bird seed mixes: Offer a mix to cater to a wide variety of birds. I get the generic wild bird food in large bags at Walmart and it attracts a wide variety of birds.
- Tube feeders, platform feeders, and seed feeders: Different types of feeders attract different kinds of birds.

Provide Fresh Water
A water source is essential for attracting birds. Here are some tips:
- Shallow bird baths: Small birds love these for drinking and bathing.
- Small pond or water features: Moving water is especially attractive.
- Fresh water: Keep the water clean and replace it regularly.
- Water year-round: Ensure there’s water available even in winter months.
Plant Native Plants
Native plants are important for creating a natural habitat that supports local birds.
They provide natural food sources like berries and attract native insects, which are vital for birds. They also give them a place to hide from predators. Here are some ideas to add to your backyard:
- Native trees and shrubs: These offer shelter and nesting sites.
- Native flowers and tubular flowers: These attract hummingbirds and other nectar feeders.
- Evergreen trees: Provide year-round cover and nesting sites.
- Brush piles and dead trees: Offer safe places for birds to hide and nest.
Create a Bird-Friendly Landscape
A bird-friendly landscape includes various elements to meet birds’ needs:
- Nesting boxes and bird houses: Great materials for cavity nesters.
- Grass clippings and pet hair: These are excellent for nest building.
- Variety of plants: A mix of plants creates a diverse habitat.
- Safe place: Ensure your yard is safe from predators like cats.
Add Hummingbird Feeders
Hummingbirds are attracted to bright colors and sugar water. Here’s how to attract them:
- Hummingbird feeders: Fill them with a mixture of four parts water to one part sugar.
- Clean feeders: Regularly clean with hot water and a part bleach solution. In the summer in Georgia I clean my feeders and put in fresh hummingbird food once a week.
Provide Shelter and Nesting Sites
Birds need safe places to nest and take shelter:
- Evergreen trees and native shrubs: Offer cover during the winter months.
- Dead trees: These provide natural nesting sites for cavity nesters.
- Brush piles: Great for ground-level shelter.
Maintain a Clean and Healthy Environment
A clean environment is crucial for attracting birds:
- Clean feeders: Regularly clean to prevent disease.
- Natural foods: Avoid using pesticides that can harm birds.
- Bird-friendly plants: Opt for plants that support the local ecosystem.
Be Patient and Enjoy the Process
Learning how to attract birds to your backyard takes time and little effort. Spend time observing and enjoying the different types of birds that already visit your yard so you can give them what they need to stay. It’s a great way to connect with nature and support the bird population in your area.
By incorporating these elements into your backyard, you’ll create a welcoming environment for wild birds. It’s an easy way to enjoy a constant stream of birds and contribute to the local ecosystem. Happy birdwatching in your own backyard!
