Upcycled Vintage Mirror to White Board

Okay, here is the last part my laundry room makeover! If you missed the first three posts please check them out: DIY Chevron Tray, No Sew Sink Skirt, and No Sew Faux Roman Shade.

A vintage mirror that has a detailed, red wood frame

Last year I bought this vintage mirror off craigslist thinking I would do a quick makeover on it. It has sat in a closet for a year.  Literally.  A year. (Excuse the garage mess in the reflection!)

I love the ornate style of it but my husband was less than enthused so he wasn’t exactly encouraging me to get my project finished. Finally when we decided I would get free reign in the laundry room makeover I figured it was the perfect place for the mirror. But first it needed some jazzing up!

The mirror itself was crazy heavy-so I asked hubby to take it off for me…he had a little help from his assistant.

I used Valspar Hacienda Tile to give it a little pop! I love how it accentuates the details of the carved wood.

I didn’t want to put the mirror back on once I had it painted-it was just so heavy I would have had to hang it in a stud and really I have no need for a mirror in the laundry room. I debated making it a cork board or a chalkboard, even hanging it empty on the wall and using it to frame some vinyl. In the end I decided a white board would be the most versatile so I ordered Elmer’s foam white board, cut it to size and hot glued it on the back of the frame. I liked the way it looked to leave the sides empty and only have white board in the middle section.

I love the way it turned out! I think its the perfect complement to the turquoise chevron tray I made last week and really brightens up the space. Plus I love that I can write little inspirational messages on the white board because I can always use a little reminder to be cheerful when I’m doing the laundry!

  1. Love that color! I had no idea they made a foam dry erase board. Now I’m going to have to order some, because I’ve passed up on several projects thinking the white board would be too heavy.

As far as taking photos, I use a Canon PowerShot SX130IS. My laundry room is shaped a lot like yours, although even smaller. I had to stand on my washing machine to get a picture of it when we were redoing it last year!

  2. Elmer’s foam white board??
I searched on amazon but I only saw foam core boards.
Can you tell me what/where you got this?

I could really use it in a classroom.

  3. Yes-I got it from Walmart online. It’s not the best-I’m not sure how it would hold up to daily use. It took some effort to fully erase things I’ve written so far. But for what I’m using it for its been ok so far.

  4. The foam board is genius…The mirror is beautiful!!! My husband has finally come to the place where he says “What color do you want it?” He took awhile, but is coming around…Blessings, Becky

  6. I so love that frame and it looks modern and could be in Domino (if currently being published) in that fun color. The previous white version also worked well for cottage chic, but this happy color is perfect to keep you energized while doing laundry.
